Inspiring Leadership Units
1. What are your personal values, and what role do values play in your leadership?
The first unit will help you to reflect on what your fundamental beliefs about education are. It will help you to make sure that these remain at the centre of your decision making and understand when to compromise and when to hold firm.
2. How could a simple model shape your school’s sustainable improvement?
Unit 2 adopts a doughnut as a model for transforming the way you think about every aspect of school leadership. The doughnut model will help you to strike the right balance between school improvement and a healthy work-life culture.
3. What evidence is useful for making judgements and how do you know?
Schools are data rich but time poor. In unit 3 we will look at how a superficial understanding of performance data can lead you astray. It investigates the biases we unconsciously apply to data and how you can avoid making decisions that could have catastrophic consequences.
4. How do you develop breadth as well as depth in your leadership and that of others?
Leaders with breadth as well as depth of experience typically make better decisions and experience less stress. Unit 4 looks at how to identify potential for the future and develop teams which combine to make the best decisions and have the greatest impact.
5. How can you inspire the extra effort which drives all great organisations?
Unit 5 examines what motivates some people to give discretionary effort. It also looks at cultures that exaggerate hard work, eroding the love of teaching at the expense of students. It will give tips to avoid a toxic ‘hard work’ culture.
6. Maximising impact with minimal input - how can you drive real change?
So much of school life depends on rules and protocols. Unit 6 will give practical strategies to harness the power of behavioural psychology to ensure that students are nudged into making the right choices without realising.
7. How can you cut through the ‘noise’ and decide what’s really important?
8. Who are your leadership role models and what is an authentic leader?
What are the challenges for the next generation of leaders and who can they look to for inspiration? The final unit looks at examples of inspirational and flawed leaders to help you decide what kind of leader you want to become.
Economy with the truth, obfuscation and spin have infected public discourse on education. Unit 7 looks at the methods people use to confuse and steal your attention and gives strategies to avoid being duped.
